Guidance in Slovenia

Introduction

Educational and vocational guidance in Slovenia has a long history as specialists on the field of vocational guidance got a professional autonomy in 1955. Vocational guidance in the frame of Employment service of Slovenia as leading national institution on the field of employment and guidance has got a new impulse with Centres for information and vocational guidance (CIPS) network which has expanded through Slovenia from 1998 onward. Vocational orientation in Slovenia operates on three levels which are mutually complementary: a) guidance and counselling provided by education and training institutions b) educational / vocational guidance and information services provided by employment administration and c) private providers on guidance. The purpose of guidance and counselling services is to support individuals in making educational choices and career plans based on the principle of lifelong learning. Everybody in Slovenia is entitled to guidance and counselling services in public institutions regardless whether they are studying, working, whether employed or unemployed. The public education sector with their counsellors in schools and guidance counsellors in the frame of employment sector are the main actors responsible for guidance and counselling services. Both counsellors are in contact in their main task – to offer quality and up to date information and service to their customers. In school year 2006/07 more then 800 counsellors were employed in different educational guidance settings (autonomous Kindergartens – 60, Elementary schools – 600, Secondary schools – 140 etc.).
